Laboratory Course
Advanced Vacuum & Thin Film Technologies

This hands-on laboratory course is designed to provide participants with practical expertise in ultra-high vacuum (UHV/HV) systems, thin-film growth techniques, and surface characterization. Throughout the course, students will work directly with state-of-the-art PREVAC research equipment, combining core theoretical concepts with real-world operation, material deposition, and in situ surface analysis.

iMBE-systems_1-750x584

Integrated Molecular Beam Epitaxy System (iMBE)

This station focuses on Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) technology. During the practical sessions, participants will perform controlled atomic-layer growth of high-purity single-crystal thin films under Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) conditions. Students will learn how to operate effusion cells, control flux rates, adjust substrate heating, and monitor growth kinetics in real time.

032-PRIMS-Basic-MS-systems_1-750x584

Magnetron Sputtering System (032 PRIMS Basic MS)

This module covers Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) using the compact PRIMS magnetron sputtering system. Participants will execute the full process for depositing metallic and dielectric coatings. Key practical tasks include system pump-down procedures, plasma ignition, process gas flow control (e.g., Argon), and tuning DC/RF power settings to achieve target film thickness and uniform step coverage.

Standard-PES-systems_1-750x584

Standard Photoelectron Spectroscopy Systems (Standard PES)

Dedicated to surface analysis via Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS/UPS). In this lab exercise, students will investigate chemical composition, oxidation states, valence band structures, and work functions of sample surfaces. Hands-on tasks include sample transfer via the load-lock chamber, precision alignment using a multi-axis manipulator, and spectral data acquisition and interpretation.

ipld-systems_1-750x584

Pulsed Laser Deposition System (IPLD)

An advanced workstation dedicated to synthesizing complex oxides and heterostructures using pulsed laser ablation. Participants will explore pulsed laser interaction with target materials, plume formation, and target-to-substrate transfer in controlled background gases. Practical exercises involve adjusting laser fluence, repetition rates, background gas pressures, and substrate temperatures to optimize film stoichiometry.

Programme

Workshops & social programme

The IUVSTA workshop will also include a series of practical workshops held in PREVAC laboratories, offering participants an opportunity to see advanced vacuum technologies and instrumentation in an industrial research environment.

The lectures and scientific sessions will take place at Hotel Pradziad, providing a comfortable setting for scientific exchange, discussions and networking.

The programme will also include a social and cultural excursion around Silesia, giving participants the opportunity to discover the region’s unique industrial heritage. The trip will include a visit to a historic Silesian coal mine, where participants will be able to experience one of the most characteristic elements of the region’s industrial history.

More details about the workshops and excursion will be announced soon.
