Measurements
How does a laser interferometer work?
- Light source – At first, we have a laser that emits a coherent beam of light with a single wavelength.
- Beam splitting – The light hits a beam splitter (e.g. a semi-transparent mirror), which divides it into two parts that follow different paths.
- Reflection and recombination – Both beams bounce off the mirrors and return to the point where they meet.
- Interference – Since light is a wave, its two parts can amplify (constructive interference) or cancel each other out (destructive interference), depending on the difference in their optical paths.
- Analyzing the results – The detector records the interference result, and changes in the system (e.g. moving one of the mirrors) cause changes in the interference pattern that can be measured very precisely.
